Psalm 119: 11 “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not
sin against thee.’ Do you ever memorize verses? The psalmist says that he
has hid God’s word in his heart, why? It is so that he will not sin against
God. Saying he has hid God’s word in his heart means that he has
memorized them, he knows them well. We should also keep God’s word in
our heart.
Proverbs 3:1-4 says: “My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep
my commandments: For length of days and long life, and peace, shall they
add to thee. Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy
neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: So shall thou find favour
and good understanding in the sight of God and man.” In it says “forget
not my law” that means remember them! Memorizing them has lots of
benefits! It keeps us from sinning against God, (Psalm 119) having long
life, peace, as well as finding favor and good understanding in the sight
God and man! Proverbs 7:1-3 has something similar to say: “ My son,
keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee. Keep my
commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye. Bind them
upon thy fingers, write them upon the table of thine heart.” Memorizing
means to commit to memory, learn by heart. That is why the word heart is
mentioned so many times. We should know God’s word, which is the
Bible, by heart.
2 Timothy 2:15 states: “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a
workman that needed not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of
truth.” We should be studying our Bible, to show ourselves approved unto
God. We can be someone who is not ashamed, some who rightly divides
the word of truth (the Bible). Memorizing the Bible can help us achieve all
that!
Some helpful tips for memorizing are:
- Write it down. Using a pen (or pencil) and paper has been shown to help
your brain remember and retain information better.
- Keeping it written on a card that you can keep in your pocket or
somewhere close by, so you can check it through out the day
- Repeating it little by little. Say the first phrase, then the first sentence,
add a word or two, and keep going until you can say the whole verse by
memory. Repetition is key.
- Putting it to music! You can use simple well known tunes (such as Jesus
Loves Me), but instead of the lyrics sing your verse.
Remember people are different, and they remember things differently. Do
not compare yourself to other people in how much you have memorized,
or at what speed you can memorize verses, or chapters.
2 Peter 3:18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and
Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.
